Why Impact?
I get asked this question a bit.
When we were in the process of renaming the school, it was one of the first names we considered. It was cast aside for various reasons. We considered other names Aspire, Inspire, Zenith, Performance, Purple Dragon, Blue Ninja, Highlands Ranch Taekwondo The list goes on and on and its mostly ridiculous. None of the names spoke to us.
We stopped. Then asked ourselves what do we want the name to say? How do we impact our students and their families? How do we stand out? How can we represent a powerful presence? We went back at it – Action Taekwondo, Motivate! Challenge Martial Arts, Excite Taekwondo, again we ended up in the ludicrous. Would you attend the Zen Action Zone School of Martial Arts?
Again, we stopped. We revisited how do we want to change our students? How do we affect change in the community? What is our culture? How do we impact our students? How do we impact our families? And we realized something – one word kept appearing. Over and over, it was in our conversations. In our what thoughts, in what we were trying to realize. That word was impact. Once we realized that word – Impact. While not quite magic everything else started to crystalize.
It became a touchstone for how we all should live. It became the focus for how we create our culture. It became the central message of our all our goals. To make an impact. It fit all our criteria. It was a power word. It was an aspirational word. It was short. And of course, it sounded pretty cool. So, we became Impact Taekwondo.
One of my new favorite sayings is “There is no I in team. But, there is an ‘I Act’ in Impact”
To make a change in ourselves, our children, and our communities we must make an impact.
We must act.
